ReadSpeaker is a server-based product that speech-enables your website for the benefit of people who would like to listen as well as read. With no downloads it is available to all. The product is easy to implement and already used widely in the public sector.
ReadSpeaker SayIt is implemented on the website as a small HTML code that shows a SayIt button (can be customized). When the user selects text/clicks the button, the selected text/web page will be read in a new player window.
How it works
- The webmaster puts a "SayIt-button" on every page that should be speech enabled.
- The user highlights some text and clicks on the SayIt button and the selected text will be read.
- Hotkeys are supported and allows the user to press ALT+L if it is supported by the browser.
- The highlight-and-click feature requires that the user is using a web browser that supports JavaScript.
- If the user does not highlight any text, or if the web browser used does not support JavaScript, the whole page will be read.
- It is possible for the webmaster to insert code on the page to control what should and should not be read.
- The webmaster can set one of many playback behaviors including the display of a popup window or whether to use mp3 or wav.
- You can compare the SayIt-button with a "Print" button, but the text is read out for the visitor rather then printed.
